What to look for workplace safety?

Updated: Oct 27, 2022

Key Points:

  1. Workplace safety could be the most underestimated and under-noticed area. For some jobs, it can be more direct and explicit, such as zookeeper, construction worker, etc. However, for most office jobs, potential risks, such as slips, over-use of computer, or even cut by paper, can be overlooked by most people. I know somebody accidentally cutting himself badly by trying to open a package.

  2. Workplace safety is so important, that we only choose the best authoritative source. You can find all of the most common risks related to workplace, and also most occupation-related risks for each specific job.

According to Wikipedia, "Occupational safety and health (OSH), also commonly referred to as occupational health and safety (OHS), occupational health, or occupational safety, is a multidisciplinary field concerned with the safety, health, and welfare of people at work (i.e. in an occupation)."

Workplace safety is mostly the responsibilities of the employers. But as an employee, you also need to pay attention to some areas that could affect your life.

Here we quote the most important information from "CCOHS - Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety". Here is a list of occupational risks that could happen to your workplace:

  1. Biological Hazards: This is primarily for the people working with animals.

  2. Diseases, Disorders and Injuries: This is quite broad, including contacts and exposures to dust, molds and infectious diseases, etc.

  3. Physical Agents: This is including noise, vibration, radiation, and extremes in temperature, etc.

  4. Psychosocial Issues: This is primarily for mental health in the workplace.

  5. Chemicals and Materials: This is about dangerous chemicals in the workplace.

  6. Ergonomics: This is from physical activities from work.

  7. Safety Hazards: This is for some specific jobs that could be dangerous.
